"... a system in which samples of known but undisclosed content are introduced into a laboratory's routine testing procedure."
The Health Protection Agency is a network organisation with laboratories strategically located throughout England and Wales, linked to specialist microbiological reference units and epidemiological experts. This internationally renowned body of specialists is uniquely placed to develop EQA schemes for microbiological laboratories.
All laboratories offering a quality microbiological examination service must implement a quality assurance system. An effective system contributes to cost-effective laboratory management, and eliminates preventable inaccuracy. HPA EQA schemes provide laboratories with an independent assessment of their quality of their microbiological services.
The schemes are open to all bona fide microbiology laboratories in the public and private sectors. Reports and performance assessments are generated by participation in the schemes.
Confidentiality is strictly maintained, and details of performance are never revealed to other individuals or organisations. The organisers provide assistance, advice and comment on any problems the participants may experience during their routine procedures, and free repeat samples are available on request after initial results have been issued.
